Plastering & skimming ยท Cheadle & Greater Manchester

Plastering and skimming, smooth enough to paint.

Walls and ceilings skimmed, re-plastering after old tiles and units come off, dry lining, stud walls and boarded ceilings. Done on its own, or as part of a kitchen, bathroom or full renovation, and painted back to a clean finish if you want it.

Walls & ceilings

Every good finish starts with a flat wall

Tiles, paint, panelling and kitchen units all show up a bad wall. Get the plaster right and everything that goes on top of it looks better and lasts longer.

A lot of our plastering happens in the middle of other jobs. When an old kitchen or bathroom comes out, the walls behind are often uneven, patched or crumbling, and they need putting right before anything new goes on. Plastering is done by our own team, so there's no waiting around for a plasterer to fit you in.

We also take on plastering as a job in its own right: a room that needs skimming, a cracked or textured ceiling, or a wall that needs re-boarding after a leak.

What we do

Plastering work we take on

One wall, one ceiling, one room or the whole house.

Skimming walls & ceilings

A thin finishing coat over existing plaster or new boards, for a smooth surface that's ready to paint.

Re-plastering after a strip-out

Walls that come away with old tiles, units or wallpaper, built back up and finished flat.

Dry lining & plasterboard

Uneven or damaged walls and ceilings boarded with plasterboard, then skimmed.

Stud walls & partitions

New timber stud walls to split a room, make a cupboard or box in pipes, boarded and plastered.

Artex & textured ceilings

Textured and artex ceilings skimmed over to a smooth, modern finish.

Patching & making good

Holes, cracks and channels left by electricians, plumbers or old fittings filled and blended in.

Advice we give every customer

Four things that decide how long plaster lasts

The difference between a wall that looks good for years and one that cracks or peels usually comes down to these.

Let it dry

New plaster turns from dark to light pink as it dries. Paint it too soon and you trap the moisture, and the paint can peel. Drying takes longer in winter and in cold, damp rooms.

Mist coat first

Fresh plaster soaks up paint. The first coat should be a watered-down emulsion, called a mist coat, so the top coats grip properly.

Fix damp before plastering

Plastering over a damp wall only hides the problem for a while. The cause has to be found and sorted first.

Leave old artex alone

Textured coatings put up before 2000 can contain asbestos, so they shouldn't be sanded or scraped. Skimming over is usually the safer option.

What happens, in order

How a plastering job runs

  1. Send photos

Photos of the walls or ceiling and a rough size of the room.

  2. Visit

Amir checks the surfaces, looks for damp and sees what's behind the old finish.

  3. Price

One clear price, including making good and painting if you'd like it.

  4. Plaster

Floors and furniture covered, walls prepared, boarded where needed, then skimmed.

  5. Finish

Tidied at the end of each day, then painted once dry if that's part of the job.

Plastering questions

What people usually ask first

Skimming is a thin finishing coat, a few millimetres thick, over walls that are basically sound. Plastering can mean that, or building a wall back up with thicker coats or new plasterboard where the old surface has failed. Amir will tell you which your walls need.

Yes. Skimming over artex or another textured ceiling is a common way to get a smooth, modern ceiling. In older homes the artex itself shouldn't be sanded or scraped, because it may contain asbestos.

Usually several days at least, and longer in cold or damp weather or where the plaster is thicker. It's ready when it's an even light pink with no dark patches. Start with a mist coat.

It can be, so we cover floors and furniture, keep the mess to the room we're working in as far as we can, and tidy up at the end of each day.

Yes. We take on single walls and ceilings as well as whole rooms and whole houses.

Yes. Painting is often the last step of our plastering, kitchen and renovation jobs, so the room is finished, not left bare.
